HAIFA Yehiel 3, 3rd Floor

Foundations of Photography

Shadow Work Salon Yechiel 3, Haifa

This course is designed for anyone who wishes to understand photography from its foundations. Throughout the course we will explore how light behaves, how a camera sees, and how an image is formed — from observation and intention, through exposure, to the emergence of the negative.

he course offers a shift from intuitive, automatic shooting to conscious and informed image-making. As our understanding of the photographic process deepens, what often feels “accidental” becomes intentional, precise, and open to choice.

This is a space for slow learning, careful observation, and the laying of solid foundations for independent photographic practice.

Course Structure

The course is divided into two parts. Registration is possible for each part separately or for the full course.

Part I

Foundations of Photography and Exposure
6 sessions
(Session dates: 7.4, 14.4, 20.4, 28.4, 5.5, 12.5)

The first part focuses on building a clear understanding of photographic language and light. We will explore how cameras work and how choices shape the final image.

By the end of this part, participants will have a solid understanding of camera operation and exposure decisions.

Part II

From Exposure to the Negative
3 sessions
(Session dates: 19.5, 26.5, 2.6)

The second part deepens the connection between theory and practice, focusing on analog photography.

By the end of the course, participants will gain practical experience and a deeper understanding of the analog photographic process, forming a strong starting point for independent work.

Tom Vol (24), born and based in Haifa. An artist and photographer whose practice focuses on analog photography through an investigation of the physical and chemical principles underlying the formation of photographic images. His work examines the behavior of light, exposure mechanisms, photochemical material responses, and development processes, bridging theoretical knowledge with hands-on practice.

In recent years, he has operated an independent home darkroom for black-and-white film development, works in camera repair, and teaches analog photography through a process-oriented approach. His research centers on the intersection of physics, chemistry, and visual perception, and on the ways the human visual system interprets light–material information into image and meaning.
